Things to Consider
People go to therapy for a wide range of reasons. Sometimes it’s to be supported through and explore specific things (whether that be relationship issues, work stress, addictions, anxiety, or bereavement) and sometimes it’s simply to have a space to reflect, to be heard and to learn more about themselves in a place that’s outside their everyday world.
A therapist’s job is to provide the right tools and environment for clients to become self-aware and find the potential for change that we all hold within ourselves.
Things to ask yourself when searching for a therapist
What am I looking for?
Do I want to work on specific issues in a set time frame or am I open to longer-term psychotherapy?
Do I want to see a man or woman?
And if I have a preference, why might that be?
What are my resources?
Can I afford therapy? You may choose to ask your doctor for a referral to see a therapist though waiting lists can be long and you may have to wait some time for your first session. In this case, it might be worth looking into mental health charities in your area who offer low-cost therapy.
